This workshop will explore best practices for ethical and effective patient communication across the medicines development lifecycle, focusing on health literacy in clinical trials and plain language summaries (PLS) of publications. We will discuss the benefits and opportunities of integrating health literacy principles in clinical trials, and present resources developed to support and enhance the clinical research community’s communications with study participants. Next, we will discuss practical strategies for eliciting, understanding, and incorporating key audience perspectives to ensure health materials, including PLS, are health literate and accessible. We will present practical tips and tools to co-develop PLS of peer-reviewed publications, identify potential target audiences and plan approaches to dissemination. Perspectives from a patient champion will be incorporated throughout.

Learning Objective : Describe the benefits of health literacy to the quality and conduct of clinical trials, and the value of seeking participant feedback; Recognize what plain language summaries of publications are, and why co-creation with patients and the public is important; describe current best practices and apply practical tools to enhance communication with patients.
