The FDA Office of Global Policy and Strategy recently commissioned a consensus committee study through the NASEM to assess progress made on recommendations from a 2012 Institute of Medicine report on ensuring safe food and medical products through stronger regulatory systems abroad. This session will present the results of the study, released in early 2020, including the current global regulatory landscape and characteristics of markets in low- and middle-income countries, challenges of regulating informal markets, and recommendations for: increasing scientific robustness at regulatory agencies in these countries, steps for increasing visibility and international investment in their food and drug safety regulatory systems, and ways to increase the will for developing such systems at national or regional levels.
